2nde HOW DOES THE PAST FASCINATE US?

 Class 1 (group)

Répondre par écrit à la question :    How does the past fascinate us?     200-300 mots

Au lieu de cela, vous avez choisi "what is the past?"

How does the past fascinate us?

How does the past fascinate us? First of all, what is the past? It’s a moment that happened before, but it is vague so we will try to define it. Secondly, how does this past fascinate us? Is it because itfascinates us because we are all curious by natureand or because it allows us to learn a lot?  Let's focus on those aspects then.

The past, or the history of our world first allows us to learn about how our ancestors lived, which is an interesting subject because their way of life was very different. Indeed, it is also a subject which inspires and which gives rise, for example, to films. We are fascinated by the past because we like to discover the unknown but thatyet, we cannot really fully discover because there is a lack of evidence, both visual and verbal. Indeed, no one from the past is alive to speak with us and cameras were only recently invented.

But alsoBesides,  the past allows us to learn from past ourmistakes and successes. Indeed, it is by studying these errors that we can prevent them from happening again. This past is a lesson for us, whether it is general (society) or personal (our childhood).

To conclude, the past is fascinating because it is from it that our society and the person we are today were built. By studying the past, we can find things that may interest us while giving us lessons, experiences.

Tom J.

How does the past fascinates us? (1)It existsThere are two faces  kinds of past / The past has two faces. And we will see these two faces now. In a first part, we will see how the community’s past fascinates us. And secondly, we will see  talk about what we call "our personal past" and how it could can be fascinating.

The community’s past has known a lot of things like/ (2)been through a lot of events such as wars, likenatural disasters, and a lot of awful (2) otherthings / hardships and it makeshas contributed to create the solidarity of our world. It also creates toosome tensions between States. And the past has always some repercussions in the present. But  However, the world has also known too some good moments/great achievements and celebrations have beentodaycreated today to remember / commemorate these good moments successful events and these victories. So,I think that the past could be fascinating for the story that it represents for the next generations, for the celebrations, for the knowledge of the world.

Secondly, I have my past like each person can have, and it’s made byup of all the memories, the emotions and all those good things Ihave lived during our past experienced until today. It’s fascinating for someone who knows us but it’s not interesting for someone else. So, the personal past fascinates us and our family and friends because this kind of populations peopleloves our stories and it allows know us us to know one another a bit more better.

Finally, I believe that the different pasts interest the different every kind of people but in all the cases, the past fascinates us because it increases the knowledge about the world or about someone we like and it’s very important because that makes / producesnew memories and new stories to tell to fascinate the future of the humanity.

  • 1) It existsThere are

EXIST  =

1/=> be real; to be present in a place or situation

ex: Does life exist on other planets?

2/ =>  live, especially in a difficult situation or with very little money

ex: We existed on a diet of rice.

  • 2) been through a lot of events such as   (subir / "such" as   passe mieux)

Tea pourer, known as the Pot Master

Biscuit supplier and referree, known as the Tiffin Master. This role may be seconded to the Pot Master if insufficient players are available.

Two opponents, or Dunkers

Tea Duelling Rules

1 Only tea may be used. Coffee? Chocolate? Don’t be facetious. Only tea. Milk and sugar may be applied to taste.

2 Biscuits are traditionally all of the same variety to ensure fairness. As tea duelling has evolved, biscuits may be varied to allow for opponent tactics and strategies. Will you take a round chocolate digestive or a sturdy little Custard Cream? The choice, sir or madam, is yours.

3 Opponents must have cups of the same size and shape to avoid any ugly discussions of cheating.

4 The opponents must first shake hands and bow, then sit opposite each other across a table on which the tea and biscuits will be placed. They may eyeball each other and make desultory comments designed to wilt the opponent’s focus as desired, but they must shake hands before the duel commences.

5 The Pot Master must pour tea for the opponents, taking care to ensure that the tea is sufficiently hot to allow for biscuits to crumble, and also ensuring that the same quantities of tea are poured into each cup.

6 The Tiffin Master hands the Dunkers a choice of biscuits on a serving plate and invites them to select their biscuit of choice with an announcement of “choose your weapon”. The Dunkers will each select their biscuit of choice. Once a biscuit is handled, it must be chosen, with no substitution.

7 The Dunkers will hold their biscuits by the edge not more than six inches above the cup of tea.

8 On the Tiffin Master’s command of “Dunk”, both opponents will immediately lower their biscuit into the tea and hold it there, ensuring that biscuits are fully dunked with not more than half an inch above the surface of the tea.

9 The Tiffin Master will forcefully count to five. On a count of “five”, the Dunkers will raise their biscuits and attempt to eat them. The entirety of the biscuit must be consumed for a clean “Nom”.

10 If both opponents secure a clean Nom, the Dunker who last ate their biscuit is judged to be the victor.

It is indeed a modern object of modern erabecause the Xbox😵is DIDnot exists😵no sat thattime whenHOWEVER, this design comes from the past  and especiallyWHAT'S MORE, the objects fed to theUSING electricity is not spread and neitherHAD NOT BEEN createdYET.

  1. .What does this steampunk creation say about our relationship with technology nowadays? (= what does it reveal?)

These creations are objects of the time spent with the period design but with the technology of this modern era that is much more efficient

GAME OVER  => you have to refer to what you have learnt in the course:  it's all about a sense of nostalgia for a time when people used to understand the technology they used in opposition to today. It's also a humorous way to warn about the alienation high tech brings about in so far as we use it without any knowledge of the way it works, which is rather insane or mad: it shows we have lost control over them (the high-tech objects that have invaded our lives).

That's why the title of the unit is "back in control"; indeed, it reminds people that it's healthier to use things you understand because it means that you are definitely in control.

It has many implications on a large scale as to the evolution of mankind if you think twice.

BONNE REFERENCE, BIEN TROUVÉ

CLASS 7 ILLUSTRATION AND TRAINING TASK

With Alban...

This is the cover from The Time Machine, a novel written byH. G. Wells in 1895. Time travel is represented bya clockwork with a wheel made of several cogs, rivets and brass buttons.

Although the idea of a Time Machine is futuristic, the design and the material described throughout the scene belong tothe past.

This scene from The Time Machine is centred around two characters referred to as“the Time Traveller” and “the Medical Man”. The Time Traveller is proud to present a model of his time machine and to explain its functioning.

The Time Machine is described asbeautifully made even if it is only a model. Around a saddle, there is an odd twinkling bar and two white levers: one to go to the future and one to come back.

Many objects we use today were invented during the 19th century. In H. G. Wells’ novel, the invention is a time travelling machine with a simple basic functioning, which shows Victorians had no limits to their imagination and that they shared an optimistic vision of the future.

  • ACTIVITÉ p 211 : commentaire d'image:

Look at the illustration.

a.Describe it and think of a name for this crazy invention.

The inventon is a flying machine, it has a place SEAT / IT HAS ROOM for one passenger, maybe two. Instead of a mast, there is a big heap of gears, forming a giant clock. Strings are linked to the head of the machine, wHich look like a bird's head.

It could be named an aerogear.

b.How is it inspired by Britain’s Victorian past?

It is inspired by the Britain's Victorian past because it useStechnology wHich hasWAS developed at thAT time, like gears and steam. The aviation is also an important theme of this period, because that's when airships were invented. The clock is also a recurring element of the Britain's Victorian past.

  • TRAINING TASK

Draw the plans for your own steampunk invention and pitch it to your classmates.

My steampunk invention is called Archimedes's sphere. It looklike a metallic ball with a lot of gears and some rings nested all together. Depending on the settings, it can do multiple things, like roll like a wheel, expulse a cloud of steam or fire, AND create a light or a noise.
