            A – Cross New Frontiers

→ According to me JAMAIS "TO ME" (rappel de cours=> according to untel ou the author ou my mother ou qui vous voulez. .. SAUF "me")IN MY OPINION, the first article (group A) corresponds to the second cover because, the text wasIS about something « which, for 60 days, will circle the earth at an altitude of 200 miles ». It means that the text as about the « baby space station ».

 To finish with

byAS A conclusion,

the second article (group B) corresponds to the first cover where we can see a kind of space station which is coming ongoing tothe moon. The members of a panel of expert wrote in their article, that they expect that soon, we are going to built a station in space.

coming ongoing to    comprendre la différence entre come and go

→ article 1 : « a baby space stationwhich, for 60 day, […] »

→ article 2 : « We willgo to the moonin the next 25 years. »

other phrasal verbs studiedin class, in other courses :

I think that it could be like : « turn the camera on » ; « switch off/on the light »  YES

but we have started a list: I asked you to start a list PHRASAL VERBS that would have to be completed along the year... 😞

A}

2.The text A matcheswiththe cover 2 (« the baby space station »).

The text B matcheswiththe cover 1 (« Man on the Moon »).

3.Text A : the missing word is Sattelite.baby space station

Text B : the missing word is Moon

4.Text A : This text is a newspaper article written on October 18th 1952 and published in the Collier’s. It is about space exploration, and a laboratory-robot sent in space for 60 days to film space-» ?? first views of space.

The cover in a drawing, it shows the sattelite in space, cone-shapedwith solar panels on the top, and THE Earth under it.    can be seen below

Text B : This texteis a newspaper article published in the Collier’son October 18th 1952. It is about the moon, and they said that man will WOULD g(CONCORDANCE DES TEMPS)to the moon in the next 25 years .

Actually, it took them 27 years in reality, they were very close  🎯🙂

and the article also said mentions that in 1952, they had the knowledge and the tools to build rockets and aircrafts to send humans into space, but that the preparation time was too big long.

The cover is a drawing too, it shows a rocket that is taking off. Far from the rocket, we can see the Earth, so we can think that the aircraft is taking off from the moon.

CORRETION

A.1   OBSERVE,  READ, MATCH, RECAP 🎯

1/ Read the introductory paragraph on the left and observe the

magazine covers.

These covers are aboutspace / the Space Race(back) in the 1950s / during the Cold War.The rockets / spaceship look likeprojects.

2/Read THE TWO texts and match them with the corresponding

covers.

               1st picture => cover number 2.

2nd  picture => cover number 1.

3/Fill in the gaps of the text with word(s) from the cover.

baby space station   and  moon

4/Present THE TWO texts and THEIR COVERS

in your own words. Justify your choice.

The first text deals witha project that was supposed to launcha robot shaped like a cone,fitted /equipped with cameras. The goal / purpose of the mission is to explore space and to take pictures (probably for future missions). They soundexcited about pushing the boundaries(= limites/frontières).

The second text focuses onthehopes / expectationsfor future missions to the moon, what is needed to complete / achievethe mission(the spaceship, etc.), the plansfor a space station on the moon.

Apollo 11 : The first men on the Moon

Trail B :

1 / The first men on the Moon were Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong.

2/ The references to the media in the text are « television » ; « broadcast » ; « camera » and « transmitted ».

The media is here because it’s historical, this is the first men on the moon.

=>The event was fully covered by the media(because it was an extraordinary feat/exploit/ achievement as well as the very first time for a man to set foot on the moon.)

3/ This mission was important in terms of geology and communication because it allowed the astronauts to collect some lunar rocks and give them to scientists to see what the Moon is made of. This mission also allowed the United States to show that they areWEREthe first to go to the moon by planting their flag in its floor.

Meet up !

The goal of this mission 😵is😵WAS    that if theyTOsucceed BECAUSE THEN they wOULD be the first to land on the moon, but it was also to discover the moon and what it is made of FOR SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE. This mission 😵is😵WAShistoric because it 😵is😵WASthe first time man 😵has😵HAD set foot on the moon.

  • "The goal of this mission is that if they succeed..."  Peut-être mieux de reformuler : they aim at being the very first to set foot on the moon so as tolead the space race.
  • surveillez LES TEMPS

Prepare your project

The president – What does it feel LIKEto walk on the moon?

The astronaut - Walking on the Moon is like a child's dream come true, it's like being in another dimension because you feel lighter, you make jumps of 4 meters high, it's just an incredible feeling. It's likeAS IFwe're out of reality.

The president – 😵Have😵WERE youbeen scared when you landed on the moon?

The astronaut - We were excited and stressed at the same time becauseAS we were about to land on the moon (but we didn't know if we were going to be crashed)because it was risky and we were aware we could crash.

- excited mieux que happy peut-être

The president - How do you feel about this mission?

The astronaut - For me, this mission is the most incredible thingFLIGHTthat happened to meI HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED because (we are the first MEN to set foot on the Moon) IT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE / it is a breakthroughand it wasIS like a dream come true, but it’s also the fruit of several months oryears of training that are rewarded with aTHIS  walk on the Moon.

The first crew on the moon were American (Apollo 11). Armstrong (l. 18) and Aldrin (l. 21) were two of the three members of the crew.

There were several broadcasts of the Apollo 11 crew because it was a milestone in American / mankind’s history: no one had ever landed / set foot / stepped / walked on the moon.NASA wanted to broadcast what was happening inside the spaceship, they wanted Americans to share this experience.

The astronauts had to / were supposed to collect minerals / rocks from the surface of the moon – NASA thought they would find interesting / valuable resources (that they could mine / tap / exploit) during future missions.

They erected a flag and talked to President Nixon and to TV crews. It meant a lot for the USA as President Kennedy had promised they would land on the moon in the 1960s.

The main goal of the launch was to send men to the moon, which JFK had pledged / promised would happen before the end of the 1960s.These men were supposed to walk on the moon; this was a major breakthrough too. The interviews were broadcast on TV, to show American citizens what the crew had accomplished.

The crew managed to collect core samples and soil for American scientists to study the moon’s geology. Maybe they planned to use these resources. They talked to President Nixon right after erecting the star-spangled banner. The USA wanted to show how important it was to outdo / outrun the USSR during the Space Race.
