1 SVT September

Monday, October 2nd

1.Today we have to do the recap in pairs and also assess our classmate

2. HOW ARE MAFIA GANGSTERS REPRESENTED IN FICTION?

For me/ in my opinion / I think / As far as I am concerned, when the gangster has the leading role, he is very likeable, charismatic, stricking and usually / most of the time it is an iconic, popular and well-known actor who gets the role / is  appointed for /is chosen the role.

On the other hand, we can notice that when / if  they aren't the focus of the story / plot,

they are seen / presented / shown as bad / evil/ mean / nasty / wicked guy(s)

A FILM POSTER

We can see a huge bridge which is iconic of the U. S. Indeed, it's a very familiar view. It is the
Bridge of Manhattan. We understand that the scene takes place in the USA, especially in New York, probably in Brooklyn which is a poor borough. The colours of the poster are dark and sepia. Darkbecause the story deals with mobsters; they are dark characters and sepia so as to (=in order to ) convey (=communicate) the idea that the action took place a very long time ago.

(very old photographs have this particular sepia  colour) The title echoes this : "Once upon a time..."

Thursday, September 14, 2017    GROUP 2

Last time we saw several pictures related to the events that took place during the summer.

We chose 3 of them and we talked about them to say what we knew about the subjects.

We started getting organized for our English class this year, as it is the beginning of a new school year and we met our new English teacher.

For example, we know now how to organize our notes in our exercise-books and we know that we must speak English all the time.

We also revised some grammar rules and we learnt some new structures and words.

GRAMMAR

Last time => marker of time = past

So I must use the preterit

New words

  • instead of    => instead of asking « how do you say « … » in English, you can explain the word

  • Feel comfortable / feel at ease   (feel, felt, felt) / feel good / feel confident

  • provide, d, d –ing    => give

  • I mean… je veux dire…
  • So, …
  • Well, …
  • Look up a word in the dictionary
  • Look for something

  • at ease // ill-at ease

  • ease => the same root as in the word ‘easy’, so it is a good strategy to look for the root or the etymology of a new word : if we can relate it to another word we already know, it will be much easier not only  to memorize it but also to use it

  • I feel confident = I trust myself, I know I can succeed

  • easy => easier => much easier

  • nowadays > at the moment > currently > these days > today

  • assess, ed, ed –ing  = give a mark   (évaluer)
  • assessment  (Noun) = the act of assessing = évaluation

FALSE FRIENDS => the beginning of a list

  • actually : en fait, vraiment

Criteria for my assessment at the board

Autonomie  …/5

Interaction avec la class …/5

Gestion tableau …./5

Correction de la langue …./5

Criteria for my assessment if I am orally tested for the recap

Lexique …../5

Linguistique ….. /5

Phonologie ……/5

Socio-linguistique   …./5

STRATEGIES

look for the root or the etymology of a new word : if we can relate it to another word we already know, it will be much easier not only  to memorize it but also to use it

If I don’t know how to say a word, I provide a synonym.

If I can’t think of any synonyms, I explain the word (in English)

If I have all the time in the world (I am not in a conversation) I can look it up in the dictionary or search the web for its translation, because there are some dictionaries on line, such as ‘word reference’

  • ease => the same root as in the word ‘easy’, so it is a good strategy to look for the root or the etymology of a new word : if we can relate it to another word we already know, it will be much easier not only  to memorize it but also to use it

1 SVT September

class secretary: Sebastien D

Homework : have a look at the picture (see doc above) then pick an event and make some research: you will talk about it in class.

Friday, the 8th of September

Breaking News => What happened during the summer ?

We have  noticed/picked/chosen five events.

They are about/deal with Sports, Science, Arts and Politics.

The Olympics Games will take place/ will be hosted in 2024 in Paris and four years later in Los Angeles, that is in 2028.

The seventh season of Game of Thrones was released during the summer. It’s an American fantasy series. It seems to be inspired by the Middle Ages because there are a lot of swords, armors, knights, kings, and queens.
