End of the recap Document "The New Americans"
Strategies for the oral comprehension at the Baccalauréat
Strategy 1
1st listening
I identify the nature of the document
characters
topic
place
time
other meaningful peaces of info
2nd listening
I complete my notes about the global comprehension and I start going into the details
3rd listening
I complete my notes with all the details I can => detailed comprehension
Then I organize my notes in order to structure my presentation
What I mustn't do :
-interpret / judge
- give in to the temptation to add some pieces of information
My piece of advice: take your notes in English to avoid some misunderstandings( in the rush, you can misunderstand, or not translate properly)
Furthermore it adds some difficulties to the task at hand

The document is the cover of a special issue of a magazine called/entitled "Time". It deals with immigration and means to show/is meant to / intends to show how the US has been shaped by its immigrants.
The focus of the document is the face of a young woman; it was created by a computer. In a way, she can be considered as the new face of America : indeed, she is a mix/blend of several races/ethnies such as Asians, Latinos, Africans, Anglo-Saxons/ Europeans and Eastern people. The point here is to show that the US is a nation of nations.
The document lay the emphasis on multiculturalism with the multitude of different faces (that we can see / that are displayed) in the background while at the same time it it conveys the idea of a melting-pot.
We may wonder whether such a blending of people from all over the world is realistic: is it possible that in the long run/ in the distant future / with time their physical appearance / the way they look will evolve into a new type of people?
Some think it is perfectly likely to happen / plausible.
Above all, we may consider that this picture aims at suggesting how so many people from so diverse cultures manage to live together and thrive as a nation.

We emigrate when we feel seriously threatened
As far as he knows, on his mother’s side, everybody comes from France; however, on his father’s side, his great-great-grandfather fled from Italy because of the mafia which was very influential in those days in this village. He must have felt seriously threatened because you don’t leave everything behind without a good reason. He didn’t feel safe at all.
Kilian’s grandfather came to France for love. He originally came from Belgium and at some point of his life he fell in love with a French woman who became his grandmother. Here we understand that love is a powerful enough drive as it can lead someone to live everything behind : friends, family, your language, your culture, your roots, your land.
Homework/ Assignment:
We have to investigate about the history of our family regarding emigration: Do we have any ancestors who emigrated to France? We have to try to understand the reason(s) why they did so by asking questions and talking to our families.
